Biography
b. 1904
Born in Toronto, Ontario, the daughter of Frederick S. Haines, R.C.A., she studied under him and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1924 with her B.A.
She joined the staff of the Royal Ontario Museum where she lectured in Chinese art and continued to follow various artistic studies.
Following her marriage she began to paint, and by 1935 was exhibiting with the Ontario Society of Artists, and by 1937 with the Canadian National Exhibition art shows in Toronto. Her work is technically well done, decorative, and her landscapes show the influence of her father.
She is the author of J. W. Beatty published by The Ryerson Press, Toronto, in 1948, an excellent biography of the artist with fine reproductions. This book is divided into four sections: Formative Years, Teacher, Artist, Societies and Exhibitions and has a list of principal collectors of his works. Dorothy Hoover was Librarian of the Ontario College of Art in Toronto for many years.
