Biography

Introduction:
The art work presented here represents three generations of Polish-Swedish-Canadian painting artists from 1917 to present. This is a sampling of the art work from Island Home Gallery which owns over 300 paintings from these three generations of artists. The work has been until now exhibited in this privately operated art gallery which is located on the magnificent North Atlantic Island of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, home of the Cabot Trail, the Alexander Graham Bell Museum, and the historical Fortress of Louisbourg. The four artists are:
Viktor F. Berg (1917-1980) and wife Helena nee Mentel (1917-1978)
Daughter Kris Zodrow nee Berg (1942-1992)
Daughter Tanya Mia Zodrow (1971-).
Viktor Berg (1917-1980) was a descendent from families Swedish-Baltic sea captains. His family's roots are traceable to Peter the Great of Russia. He broke the sea-faring tradition of his family and instead turned to painting, and later also sculpturing. He met his future Polish wife Helena Mentel (1917-1978) at art school in Zakopane, southern Poland, during the Second World War, where his daughter Kris was born. Both became well-known artists and painters in Sweden. They traveled widely and each travel culminated in art exhibitions, the proceeds from which provided means for their living. They exhibited in New York, Montreal, Dominican Republic, Poland, and significantly in Sweden. Vitkor lived in Montreal for a number of years, where he worked as Art Director for Morgan's. In 1968, he returned to Sweden to make painting his life's work. Viktor was a master portrait painter. Both Viktor and his wife Helena left many paintings after their death; most of them are now located in Swedish private collections and institutions.
